Private Guided Tour
Nice was considered as the big workshop of modern art by the French art critic André Chastel. All the main figures of the 20th Century modernism stayed in Nice for the region’s temperate climate and bright light.
When he discovered Nice, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) claimed: “When I understood that every morning I was to see this light, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I decided not to leave Nice and stayed there almost my whole life”.
The City of Nice gave the name to the famous art movement Ecole de Nice—a major artistic movement of the 1950’s. To renew this artistic tradition, the city of Nice commissioned a series of pieces that you can discover along the tram line. Some of the landmarks of this tour are the Aphorisms of Ben Vautier, the internationally famed local artist placed at each of the tram stops, Conversations by Jaume Plensa, The Square head by Sacha Sosno, the Fake door by Sarkis.
Furthermore, we will pay visit to some of the ateliers where the artists are still in activity and to galleries where the original works of “Ecole de Nice” artists are on display.
